	The African American Church has long been recognized as one of the most independent, stable and dominant institutions in the African American community. After slavery, African Americans established their own churches in order to escape white control and to worship in their own culturally distinct manner. From the 1820s through the Civil War years, African Americans who came to Texas generally did so as slaves. Here in America, they developed a faith born from the union of African traditions and Christian Evangelism, but they brought with them concepts, rituals, and customs from the African Diaspora. In John Hanson's special report, we'll take a look at the men who helped shape the African American religious community, as we know it today, in central Texas.</description>

Before assuming the name the Dramatics, the vocal sextet comprised of Rob Davis, Ron Banks, Larry Reed, Robert Ellington, Larry &amp;quot;Squirrel&amp;quot; Demps, and Elbert Wilkens initially released two singles as the Dynamics on the Wingate imprint that saw no chart action. The Dramatics is a soul music vocal group, formed in 1962 with the name The Dynamics.
