Austin, TX

The Texas prison system is in desperate need of guards. Around 20 prison facilities are understaffed – with more than 3,500 job vacancies looming.

Being a prison guard in the state of Texas is about to be a little bit more glamorous. The Texas Prison Board voted in favor of a pay raise for all correctional officers statewide. Michelle Lyons is with the State Prison system. She said, “The Texas board of criminal justice approved an adjusted salary schedule for correctional officers. Particularly those who are in the beginning first few months of their career. Under the proposed schedule, a correctional officer who is just beginning their career will start at $25,400, which is a $2000 increase over the previous schedule.”

Prison population growth is often blamed for many of the system’s problems. But that’s not the case for the staff shortages. Lyons says that prisoner populations have remained relatively constant over the past couple of years. The biggest obstacle isn’t even getting guards to sign up – it’s getting them to stay on for more than one year. Lyons said, “Within the first year the attrition rate has been the greatest at about 43 percent, whereas in subsequent years it has been around 24 percent. So we are looking to address those folks in that first year of their employment and keep them on in with the AEC and help them staff our unit.”

Lyons believes that the high level of attrition can be reversed with the aide of a heftier check.

The pay raises will go into effect May 1st.
