On Eklektiko

Andrew Bird @ 9:00 a.m.
Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, and former Squirrel Nut Zipper member Andrew Bird creates dark and airy compositions that incorporate whistles, strings, haunting vocals, and striking lyrical ability.

Money Mark @ 10:00 a.m.
Born Mark Ramos Nashita, keyboardist Money Mark earned a reputation as the “fourth Beastie Boy” for the work he did on the group’s earlier albums. He’s now flying solo, making chill, retro-flavored pop with hints of jazz, funk, and soul. Hear Money Mark live on KUT, then catch him at KUT’s showcase Saturday at 9:00 p.m.

Alexi Murdoch @ 11:30 a.m.
Growing up in Scotland, the U.K. folk sound had a clear influence on the music of Alexi Murdoch. After moving to Los Angeles in the ‘90s, sounds of lo-fi indie rock crept into his songs. Sentimental and meaningful, his voice and music have a resonant, beautifully haunting quality. Hear Alexi Murdoch live in the KUT studios, then see him at the KUT’s showcase Saturday night at 11:00.

On Horizontes

Forro in the Dark @ 1:00 p.m.
Forro music has been played by Brazilians for more than 100 years, but the debut album from this NYC sextet is an updated version of the traditional music with the help of David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, and Miho Hatori.

Pierre Aderne @ 2:00 p.m.
Born in Toulouse, France, Pierre Aderne was raised in Brazil. As a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and poet, Aderne’s many musical partners include Seu Jorge, Gabriel Moura, Paulinho Moska, Rodrigo Maranhao, Dadi, and others. Aderne’s debut recording Casa de Praia received excellent reviews following abundant airplay on radio stations in Rio de Janeiro.

On Left of the Dial

Peter Bjorn and John @ 8:00 p.m.
This Swedish trio comprised of Peter Moren, Bjorn Bjorn Yttling, and John Eriksson formed in Stockholm in 1999. Their latest album Writer’s Block features stripped-down arrangements and catchy refrains that are impossible to escape.

Robyn Hitchcock @ 8:30 p.m.
Contemporary English singer/songwriter and former leader of punk icons The Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock has both a distinctive voice and quirky lyrical style. Hitchcock’s highly acclaimed latest album Ole Tarantula features members of the Minus 5 and Peter Buck’s R.E.M.

The Apples in Stereo @ 9:00 p.m.
Denver-based indie stalwarts The Apples In Stereo have been creating sunny, lo-fi indie rock for more than a decade. Their latest release New Magnetic Wonder is full of plenty of charming pop sensibility.

Mando Diao @ 10:00 p.m.
Raucous garage-rockers Mando Diao formed in Borlange, Sweden, nearly eight years ago. Their music has a timeless quality, borrowing from elements of punk, mod, soul, R&B, and Brit-pop.
