Actor and musician Kevin Bacon is busy touring the Lone Star State with his brother Michael. The two are promoting their self-titled album “The Bacon Brothers,” their seventh studio record. Many Hollywood stars juggle various side projects with their careers, but Kevin Bacon insists his fraternal musical endeavor is serious business. He says it’s typically a challenge for actors to be taken seriously as musicians.
“I think it’s a lot more accepted for musicians to act than it is for actors to play music,” he says. “I also think that there’s very, very little precedent historically of anybody being truly successful at it. But we’ve never really shied away from that.”
For Kevin’s brother Michael, however, music is a full time gig. He scores films and television shows, serves as an associate professor of music at the City University of New York, and recently completed a cello concerto.
“Everything I do is music,” Michael says. “I’m not interested in anything else.”
Each brother acknowledges that the other has been an inspiring and motivating presence in their respective lives. “Michael is older than me,” Kevin says. “He’s nine years older than me, so my first exposure to music was through him.”
The Bacon Brothers, apart from touring the state at the moment, have had ties to Texas over the years. Kevin starred in the Amazon series “I Love Dick,” which was set and shot in Marfa, while Michael follows UT football. They also have family members in the Dallas area.
Their tour takes them through New Braunfels, Houston, Greenville, Dallas, and Oklahoma City.
