Breaking The Silence On Mental Illness in the African American Community

On this edition of In Black America, producer/host John L. Hanson Jr. speaks with Dr. Sarah Y. Vinson, M.D., Triple- Board Certified Harvard and Emory trained physician who specializes in Adolescent, Adult and Forensic Psychiatrist.

Dr. Vinson is an Atlanta based physician with nearly a decade of experience. Also, she is Founder of the Lorio Psychc Group and Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at MorehouseSchool of Medicine. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Medicinewith Research Honors and as an Inductee in the Chapman Humanism Honors Society, she completed her general psychiatry training at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School. She then returned to the South to complete fellowships in both child & adolescent and forensic psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Vinson has experience working as the Medical Director of the Emory University/Fulton County Jail Competency Restoration Program and as a Grady psychiatric physician on an Assertive Community Treatment team that served many patients with legal histories. She currently works at the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Dr. Vinson has been elected to statewide office by her professional peers in both the Georgia Psychiatric Physician's Association and the Georgia Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, she currently serves on the boards of the organizations, and is the President-Elect of the Georgia Council on Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. 

John L. Hanson is the producer and host of the nationally syndicated radio series In Black America. It’s heard on home station KUT Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m., as well as weekly on close to 20 stations across the country.
