From Girls Rock Austin, this month's Get Involved spotlight nonprofit:
Girls Rock Austin's mission is to empower girls, women, trans and gender-nonbinary youth through music education and performance.
Girls Rock Austin hosts summer camps for youth, providing programming for campers ages 7-17. In one week, campers learn an instrument, form a band, write an original song and play a show. Through mentorship and creative expression, GRA aims to give youth a supportive space to gain leadership and collaboration skills, share their ideas, and create positive social change in Austin and beyond.
Now in its 11th year, GRA is offering three summer camps: “Classic Camp” for youth ages 10-17 (June 5-10th), Junior Camp for youth ages 7-9 (June 12th - 17th), and Advanced Camp for youth ages 14-17 (July 24th - 29th) who are at an intermediate performance level on their instruments. Each year, GRA serves nearly 200 youth in summer camps, and hundreds more in workshops and clinics.
GRA is always looking to collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations! One of the unique aspects of GRA is the non-musical programming. GRA offers a wide array of social justice centered workshops, from media literacy to healthy relationships. Programming also focuses on building skills like recording, production, and simple circuit building. Folks interested in volunteering can help in a myriad of ways -- no music experience necessary! GRA has direct volunteer and instruction positions available, as well as opportunities to help carry out the behind-the-scenes set up and break down. Want to help but don’t have the time? GRA is a tax deductible way to donate your gently used instruments. Or you can donate funds to help GRA get supplies needed to expand programming (laptops, tools for instrument repair, guitar pedals, etc).
