President Obama to Visit Austin Thursday (Update)

Jeff Heimsath, KUT News

Update: President Barack Obama will visit Manor New Technology High School this Thursday during his trip to Central Texas. The Associated Press reports he'll also speak at Applied Materials in Austin.

Obama's visit is the first in a series of trips that will push for new models of economic growth. The President will look at which skills are driving America's economy.

The President will be speaking at Manor New Technology High School at 1:05 p.m. and Applied Materials at 4:30 p.m.

Original Post (Fri., May 3): President Obama is scheduled to be in Austin next week. The White House says the president is planning to be here next Thursday with a focus on the economy.

The visit comes just after the latest national employment report showed continued improvement. Texas in general and Austin in particular have fared better than the U.S. overall during the downturn.

The Texas Democratic Party’s Tanene Allison says the President sees value in campaigning in Texas.

“I think that this is a strong sign about what’s happening here and that we’re turning into a state that is relevant on the national level as far as the discourse that we’re having," she said. "The work that’s being done to turn Texas blue is definitely a part of that, and so we’re thrilled to welcome the president back.”

The exact time and location of President Obama's appearance have not been announced.
