South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse Gets New Opening Date

The Alamo Drafthouse announced today its delayed South Lamar location will open sometime this summer. The theater was closed in January of last year for major renovations, while the strip mall around it was demolished to make way for a new mixed-use development.

The theater was initially slated to open in September of last year, but by October only the parking garage foundation had been completed. And even this new opening date isn't very specific.

"We don't have any updates to publicly share at this time but are hoping to do so within the next couple of weeks," Alamo Drafthouse spokesperson Brandy Fons tells KUT News.

Typically, the theater is the location for Fantastic Fest, but last year the film festival was spread out among all Alamo Austin theaters. Fantastic Fest 2014 is scheduled for Sept. 19-26. Representatives from the Drafthouse would not comment whether the S. Lamar location will be open before the festival.

Former projectionist Afsheen Nomai noted on the Drafthouse's blog that workers are almost finished hanging sheetrock in the theaters, and that one of the theaters may accommodate digital projectors, 35 mm and 16 mm projectors, which are now only in use at the Alamo Ritz on Sixth Street.
