Texas Governor Rick Perry has less than a month to turn around his faltering support base before Iowa Republicans caucus.

The 100-plus degree days of just a few months ago seem so far away, now that damp, cool weather have drifted into Central Texas. Temperatures will continue to fall into the 40s today, after a strong cold front swung through the area early this morning. Look out for overnight temperatures in the 30s early in the coming week.

Paul Surges, Perry Stumbles in Iowa Poll

A new poll by the Des Moines Register this weekend shows a Texan riding second among likely voters in next month’s Iowa Republican Caucuses. But it’s not the one you might think. Congressman Ron Paul, R-Lake Jackson, gets 18 percent of the support in the survey, trailing new former House Speaker Newt Gingrich by seven points. Texas Governor Rick Perry has plummeted to 6 percent in the poll, tied with former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

The poll was taken before yesterday’s announcement by Herman Cain that he was suspending his bid for the GOP presidential nomination. Perry campaign staffers are looking to capitalize on Cain’s departure and pick up some of the 8 percent support the former Godfather’s Pizza head got in the poll results.

Holidays Envelope Downtown Austin

The first weekend in December ushered in the holiday season in downtown Austin, despite the damp, dreary weather. KUT’s John Aielli led the annual Holiday Sing Along before the lighting of the Capitol Christmas Tree. The Trail of Lights made its 2011 debut, but in a new location and in a slightly different format than years past.

The weekend also brought out art from Austin’s homeless community. The annual Art from the Streets Show and Sale is an opportunity for people without homes to sell their art projects. The sale continues through this afternoon at the St. David’s Trinity Center at E. 7th and Trinity Streets in downtown Austin.

Baylor Pounds Texas

The Texas Longhorns finish the regular college football season on a very sour note, losing to Baylor 48-24 Saturday afternoon in Waco. The ‘Horns run their record to 7-5, a mirror image of their dismal 5-7 record last year. Texas will hear tonight which bowl game they’ll be attending this holiday season.
