The Texas General Land Office is holding a symposium tomorrow to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the state's independence from Mexico. Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said the seven-year-old Save Texas History Program was created to educate Texans on the history of the state and to preserve historical documents in the General Land Office archives.
He said tomorrow's symposium will focus on the war for independence with topics such as: “How did Texas finance the revolution? What were the contributions of Tejanos, and women, and Blacks?”
Patterson said proceeds for the event will go towards conservation of historical documents. There will be lectures from academics and authors in the morning, followed by a tour of the General Land Offices archives in the afternoon. The event is being held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the AT&T Center in Austin. Registration is $40.
