With a launch planned for the end of the year, a bike share system is finally coming to Austin. And the city is pushing for public input for when the program rolls out at the end of this year.
Today, the city launched an online tool for citizens to suggest the best possible locations for rental kiosks. The Public Works department is also reaching out to Austin cyclists and stakeholders in public meetings.
The program will eventually include 400 bicycles, 600 docks, and 40 kiosks, with a third of the bikes launched in December and the rest by spring of 2014.
Austin will become the fourth city in Texas to implement the initiative; San Antonio, Houston, and Fort Worth already have similar systems.
Individuals will be able to buy day, week, month, or annual memberships. Prices have not been determined but Bike Share of Austin director Craig Staley says rates may vary from $8 to $80 for day and annual memberships, respectively.
