Sustaining Membership FAQ

Q:  How do I tell if I’m a sustaining member?

A:  Send an email to membership@kut.org and someone will get back to you within one business day. During Membership Drives, the KUT staff works as efficiently and quickly as possible, but there might be some delay in getting back to you because of the volume of correspondence with members.

Sustaining members donate to KUT monthly on their credit or debit card, on an ongoing basis, until notified to cancel. Sustainers also do not receive renewal notices from KUT! If you think you are a sustainer but are receiving renewal notices, please let us know so that we can resolve the issue; your pledge may be an installment pledge rather than a sustaining pledge, or we could have a duplicate account or email for you.

Q:  Are my monthly donations tax-deductible?

A:  Your contribution to KUT is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. View and print your giving history at any time by creating a Membership Management Account. Please consult your tax advisor or attorney for information about specific situations. Note: The fair market value of any thank-you gifts received is not tax-deductible. 

Q:  Do I need to call in during the Membership Drive to renew my pledge?

A:  Nope! As a sustaining member your membership is ongoing, and automatically renews each year. If you do call in to the Membership Drive, you might be creating a duplicate pledge for yourself! If you have any questions about your membership, send KUT an email to Sustaining Member Page.

Q:  How can I update my credit card number or expiration date for my monthly sustaining gift?

A:  There are several ways to update your account:

1)  Update your information online on our Sustaining Member Page.
2)  You can call KUT at (512) 475-6100. We are in the office M-F from 8 am - 5 pm and will happily return any voicemails we receive after hours.
3)  If you received a letter requesting updated information, you may use the form and enclosed envelope to respond.

Q:  If my card expiration date changed but my card number did not, why do I have to give my card number again?

A:  KUT adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to handling of donor credit and debit card account information. Payment Card Industry (PCI) regulations require that KUT not store actual credit card information on its computers, so when you provide your new expiration date KUT must also re-enter the card information to update it.

Q:  I’d like to increase or change the monthly amount I have been giving.

A:  Send an email to membership@kut.org, or call (512) 475-6100, and we’ll update your pledge to reflect the new amount you want charged monthly! You can also change your monthly payment amount on our Sustaining Member Page.

Q:  I’d like to make a one-time contribution in addition to my monthly Sustaining gift.

A:  That’s wonderful, thank you! There are several ways to give:

1)   Make your one-time donation online.
2)  Email membership@kut.org
3)  Call Member Services at (512)475-6100 during business hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).

Q:  How do I request my annual Thank You gift?

A:  KUT is pleased to be able to offer one thank you gift per calendar year to our sustaining members. We are so grateful for your support; we do ask that you limit your thank you gift request to one per year to save the station purchasing and mailing expenses. Before each Membership Drive, KUT contacts (via email or mail) Sustaining Members eligible for a gift with information about how to choose one. To find out if you are eligible for a thank you gift at this time, please email membership@kut.org or call Member Services at (512) 475-6100.

Q:  I want to associate my gift with either KUT or KUTX. How do I do that?

A: All donations to both stations go into the same account. You can let us know that you prefer listening to one or the other by emailing membership@kut.org.

Q:  Am I automatically entered into both of the stations’ drawings?

A: Yes! Regardless of which station your gift is identified with, you will be entered into all membership drive drawings.

Q:  What are the benefits of my Sustaining Membership?

A:  Becoming a Sustaining Member is a way to put more of your dollars into the news and music on KUT and KUTX! As a Sustaining Member, you:

  • Become a part of the KUT Community.
  • Automatically renew each year – no more renewal notices, or wondering if your membership has expired.
  • Are eligible to choose a thank-you gift each year.
  • Access to our Sustaining Member Store during pledge drives where you can purchase extra gifts featured during that time. 
  • Are automatically entered into all Membership Drive drawings.
  • Save us hundreds of thousands of dollars in postage, paper and administrative costs.
  • Invest more of your contribution into the news and music you value.

Q:  How can I join the KUTX Concert Club?

A:  The KUTX Concert Club is available to Sustaining Members who give $50/month. If you are already giving at that level and would like to join the Concert Club, you can email membership@kut.org.  Otherwise, you can upgrade your pledge at any time and write in the comments that you would like to join the Concert Club. Q:  How can I cancel?

A:  You can stop or suspend your monthly giving at any time. Just send an email to membership@kut.org or call Member Services at (512) 475-6100. Please be sure to let us know your name and address so we can confirm we are canceling the correct pledge, and if you email or leave a voicemail, be sure you receive a message back from us confirming that we have stopped your monthly contributions.

Q:  How do I match my gift through my employer?

A:  Visit UT's matching gift page to check eligibility or ask your company's human resources department. We are part of The University of Texas at Austin so in your company's online matching gift portal, you might find The University of Texas at Austin or UT Foundation instead of KUT Radio; it is fine to choose them – UT Central will deposit the matching funds into our account; just be sure to designate your gift to KUT Radio when filling out the form. If it's an electronic form, you can use membership@kut.org as contact, and if paper, just mail the form to us. We'll take care of the rest!

When filling out the form, please remember that many companies require that we receive the donations before they will match a pledge and some companies have minimum requirements for donations that they'll match, so we recommend that you wait 6-12 months after starting your membership to start submitting your gifts for matching. Just add the total and give the most recent date your sustaining gift was processed. You can also use your annual tax receipt we send in January.

Q:  Does KUT sell my name to companies or other nonprofits?

A:  No – when you donate to KUT, we will not sell, trade or share your name, email address or any other contact information with any other organization.
