TCEQ Sunset to be Released
Today we should get a preliminary look at the Sunset Advisory Commission's audit of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. That's according to the Associated Press. The Commission criticized the agency in a scathing report back in 2000. Over the past year, the TCEQ has been in some high profile battles with the federal government, namely the Environmental Protection Agency. While some accuse the TCEQ of being "too cozy" with the industries it is supposed to regulate, the AP reports the agency has increased enforcement and fines over the years.
Hasan May Face Death Penalty
A military officer is recommending the accused Fort Hood shooter stand trial and face the death penalty for last year’s shootings. Colonel James Pohl recommends Major Nidal Hasan be court-martialed on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. The recommendation now goes to another Colonel, who is waiting for the results from a mental competency board charged with evaluating Hasan.
Defense Testimony Continues in DeLay Trial
The defense continues its case today in former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom Delay's ongoing trial. Defense attorneys are focusing on when DeLay learned about the money swap at the center of the money laundering charges against him. He is accused of illegally funneling $190,000 in corporate money to Texas legislative races in 2002. DeLay says no corporate dollars went to Texas candidates.
Brrr! Time to Bundle Up
If you think this morning is cold, wait until tonight! The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for Central Texas, including Austin. It's in effect from midnight to 8 a.m. Friday. A light freeze is expected for most areas, with temperatures possibly dropping into the 20s in rural areas.
