Groupon and similar sites like Localiter, GivShop, LivingSocial, TheLunchDeal, EverSave, and ADealio are already competing to appeal to Austin spendthrifts. Do we really need another website offering daily deals?
The answer is yes, if you ask Boston brothers Casey and Jesse Rankin. They run the site DealGator. They announced today they are expanding service to include more cities, including Austin. But wait, they say, their service is different!
DealGator collects the deals from all the sites and organizes them into one personalized list. Each deal listing includes a business review from Yelp. The daily list is available to view on the website, in a daily email, or through Twitter. Members can easily customize their listing to avoid deals they aren't interested in.
The service is not unlike GroopBuy, which aggregates daily deals and delivers by email.
With the explosion of these types of websites, you may be forgiven for wondering why Google ever thought it might have been a good idea to pay $6 billion for Groupon.
