It’s already been a long, hot summer. And it’s only the 4th of July weekend!
The weather forecast for the rest of the holiday weekend? What else? Hot! Although Sunday there’s a slight chance that southerly breezes from the Gulf could trigger scattered late afternoon showers. Temperatures are expected to be at or near the century mark Sunday and Monday.
If you’re going to any local waterways, be warned: Levels are lower than normal and flows are slower. Lake Buchanan is nearly 12 feet below its July 4th normal. Lake Travis is nearly 29 feet lower. But the water quality levels in area lakes remains excellent. Once in the water, a note: the law requires boaters under 18 to pass a boat driving course if they plan to take the wheel.
The Texas Department of Public Safety has issued a travel advisory to avoid traveling to Nuevo Laredo on the Mexican border this July Fourth weekend. The DPS reports the Zetas drug cartel plans to target Americans who visit Nuevo Laredo and its surrounding Mexican suburbs this holiday weekend.
If you haven’t heard already, there’s a fireworks ban in many parts of Central Texas. The region remains in extreme drought and most Texas counties have a burn ban in place. Travis County has banned public and private fireworks displays. Austin won’t put on its annual fireworks and symphony celebration, but Georgetown, Marble Falls and Horseshoe Bay are still planning to go on with the show.
