Did you leave your car windows down today? You’ll probably return to some damp car seats. Parts of Austin finally saw some rain this afternoon. The weather that is usually considered an annoyance for those working and walking outside, was instead a welcome change.
“It wasn’t much, but it’s something,” said one of a group of construction workers who were relieved they finally have some cloud cover.
“It's cooler but it’s more humid,” said UT freshman Cristina Portillo. “I’d rather have the dry heat. ”
The brief showers were a welcome site as Austin hit its 70th day of triple digit heat yesturday, breaking a record set in 1925. Not only that, but ERCOT reached an emergency two level asking some large commercial and industrial power users to shut down in order to keep from having to do rotating power outages.
The surprise weather developed out of a small disturbance that came out of East Texas from Louisiana. And could keep Austin from reaching 100. But don't get your hopes up...
“We’re not expecting 100 degrees today but after today and Friday into the weekend we are expecting the hot temperatures to resume again,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Arellano. (click to see the forecast)
Arellano did provide some good news. There's a front that’s sagging southward. Right now the area between Bastrop and College Station is seeing rain. (Friends there say it’s been raining since yesterday.) Arellano said there could be a chance for that stuff to slide south and give us another shot at rain later this afternoon.
