A national insurance company places Central Texas among the most secure places to live in the United States.

Farmers' Insurance ranked the Austin-Round Rock area 10th most secure area with a population over 500,000. El Paso placed third in the survey conducted by www.bestplaces.net. Pittsburgh, PA topped the chart.

The study studied 379 municipalities, looking at factors ranging from crime statistics to health factors to terrorist threats. Two other Texas cities, Midland and San Angelo, ranked in the top 20 most secure cities among cities with 150,000 people or fewer.

Ian Crawford joined KUT as News Editor in 2008, after spending over four years as a reporter/anchor at KLBJ Radio in Austin.
