Confused about Austin’s coming bag ban? You’re not alone.

Austin Resource Recovery, tasked with reaching the city’s zero waste by 2040, is hosting carryout bag training sessions for local businesses at the Austin City Hall this morning.

The training is designed prepare businesses for the plastic bag ban that takes effect in March 2013.

Originally, the ban barred the use of most single use paper and plastic bags, but late last week the City Council approved adding some exemptions. Now, restaurants will largely be exempt.

Opponents argue the exemptions may create a loophole for businesses, like grocery stores, that sell both prepared foods and other products. So in attempt to make sure businesses are thoroughly versed in what’s allowed and what isn’t, the training sessions will provide an overview of the single-use carryout bag ordinance – including fines. Businesses caught breaking the rules can face penalties ranging from $100 to $2,000.

The first of the two training session begins at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. Seating will be limited to 150 attendees per session, but businesses can register in advance.
