Today the city of Austin moves closer to a new form of government.
It’s the 10-1 plan chosen by voters in the November election: 10 geographic districts drawn by citizens plus the mayor serving at large.
This evening, the names of 60 candidates for the Citizens Redistricting Commission are being presented to the City Council. And each council member can remove one name.
“They’re going to review the list,” said city spokeswoman Patricia Fraga. “They’ll have up until the 21st to strike a name -- and it’s up to their discretion how they do that.”
Those names will be available to the public at the city’s redistricting website.
From the remaining candidates, eight will be appointed by a drawing.
Those eight will select six more to complete the redistricting commission, which will draw the 10 areas, each to be represented by a council member.
