Following Bond Defeat, Eanes ISD Considers Spring Bond Election

Last night voters in the Eanes Independent School District said no to three bond proposals totaling about $150 million.  Wednesday morning Eanes ISD Board President Paul Stone told KUT News that another, smaller bond proposal could be in the works for early next year.

"That’s something we’re going to have to get together as a board and discuss. I would expect to see a new proposition presented to the community in the spring.  Clearly there’s critical needs; it’s something that we need to sharpen our pencils and refine and then present to the community in the spring," said Stone.

Proposition 1 would have paid for school buses, renovations, air conditioning, and other maintenance type items.  Proposition 2 would have funded a new elementary school, and Prop 3 was for new facilities including a swim center.

Citizens for Academic Excellence in Eanes, a political action committee,  opposed all three propositions.  The group's Al Cowan told KUT News that taxpayers want to see the district go back to the drawing board.

"We would like to see something that reflects the true needs of the district.  This PAC was not formed to be anti-district or not support our schools. It's just that it [the bond] was ill-formed and too large and too costly," said Cowan.

Meanwhile, Stone said he thinks the Eanes ISD Board will probably start with shaving down the $72 million requested in last night's Prop 1.
