The Austin Independent School District is inviting the public to weigh-in this evening on a potential bond package.
The nearly $900 million bond proposal could go before voters as soon as May. Among other things, it proposes adding four new elementary schools to address overcrowding.The bond package proposal is divided into four parts:
- $350 million for ‘critical’ repairs
- $264 million to build more schools and add classrooms
- $131 million to fix cafeterias, technology and science labs and for energy conservation
- $145 million for facility improvements for fine arts, athletics, career and technology, special education

As it stands now, the bond would cost the owner of a $200,000 homeowner an extra $70 per year in property taxes.
The public hearing is at 6:30 p.m. at Reagan High School.
Those who want to speak at the meeting need to sign up ahead of time. Either at AISD headquarters between 7:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. or at Reagan High School between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
