Each month we spotlight a local nonprofit that's in need of help. It's a way to connect our listeners with charities that make an impact.

Get Involved Spotlight: MOVE Texas

From MOVE Texas, this month's Get Involved spotlight organization:

MOVE Texas is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, grassroots organization working to build power in underrepresented youth communities through civic engagement, leadership development, and issue advocacy. MOVE is an acronym for the pillars of our programmatic work: Mobilize. Organize. Vote. Empower.

We believe that our politics and our state are better when young people have a seat at the table, and we are fighting for a Texas that believes in the power of its youngest citizens.

MOVE was started in 2013 by a small group of dedicated students at The University of Texas at San Antonio to increase participation in local elections and since then has gone statewide to become one of the most effective voter registration and engagement groups in the state. With operations in San Antonio, Laredo, Seguin, San Marcos, Austin, and Dallas – MOVE is increasing engagement and registering voters across the Lone Star state.

We’re on the ground engaging young people every day and registering them to vote, many for the very first time. MOVE Texas broke records and registered 30,000 new voters under the age of 30 in 2018 who helped triple youth voter turnout in the midterm election. In 2019, we are on track to register another 30,000 and then scale our efforts to another register 70,000 before the 2020 election. This critical work is closing the voter registration gap in Texas and making the electorate more reflective of the folks who actually call Texas home.

What we’ve learned in the past six years is simple – voter engagement works best when you connect the dots for people. It’s the reason why we help young voters understand the connection between the things they care about and their power to impact those issues. We’re creating a lasting legacy of engaged voters in Texas who will turn out to vote for every election for the rest of their lives.

Young people are the future — we’re making sure they vote like it.

We’re looking for folks passionate about engaging a new generation of Texas voters. Whether that means becoming a volunteer deputy registrar and registering some voters, passing around our voter guides, or joining our leadership development program — we need your voice in this movement.

MOVE Texas relies on the generous support of folks like you who chip in a few dollars to ensure that young people can have their voice heard in civic life. Every dollar donated goes right back into our work to MobilizeOrganizeVote, and Empower.
