Cornyn Calls for Stricter Immigration Enforcement, Opposes Amnesty

With President Obama and some legislators from both parties pushing immigration reform, Texas’s Sen. John Cornyn says he does not support a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s immigration laws.

Instead, he advocates stricter enforcement of existing laws.

“Border security, worksite enforcement, and visa overstays --  people who enter legally, and then overstay, and then just melt into the great American landscape” should be the nation’s priorities, said Cornyn, the highest-ranking Republican on the Senate’s immigration subcommittee.

Cornyn says he’ll oppose any effort to provide amnesty for people who are here illegally, saying it would be unfair to those who have followed the rules.
