Travis County has more registered voters than ever before. The Travis County Tax Office said this week that 93.5% of all eligible voters — more than 800,000 people — have registered ahead of the November election.

Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant said, historically, off-year elections like this one are lucky to draw 20% of the county's voters, even though what's on the ballot has a direct impact on their wallets.

Statewide, Texas voters will have to decide on 10 proposed amendments to the state constitution, while Austin voters will decide on just two local propositions.

What's behind the record number of registered voters? Gretchen Nagy, the director of voter registration for the county, says they're building on the high registration numbers from 2016 when they exceeded 90%.

"We’re very proud of that, but it also takes a lot of work and it takes a lot of volunteers, which is what we have in Travis County," Nagy told KUT's Nathan Bernier.

If you're part of that 6.5% that has yet to register, there's still time. Monday, Oct. 7, is the cutoff to register for next month's election.

Early voting begins on Monday, Oct. 21, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

If you have moved you have to re-register by mail or in person, but if you moved within the county, you can change your address online at VoteTravis.com.
