Austin School Board Takes Up Budget Tonight

The Austin School Board meets tonight to discuss its budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The proposed $838.9 million budget is closely aligned to the board’s “Strategic Plan Priorities,” which include expanding academic, physical, emotional initiatives to enhance the education of the “whole child,” as well as better preparing students for college and improving recruitment of educators.

The budget would be an increase of $7.7 million and could result in tax increases. Residents can also sign up to share their opinions on the proposed 2013 budget.

The takes places at AISD headquarters, 1111 W. Sixth St., starting at 7 p.m. Public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 7:55 p.m.

Alleged Zeta Cartel Horse Trainer Seeks Bond

Eusevio Maldanado Huitron, the Texas Horse trainer charged with conspiring to launder money for the Los Zetas drug cartel will be in an Austin courtroom today, seeking release from custody.

The FBI worries that if released from custody Huitron could be targeted for assassination by the cartel, the Associated Press reports. Federal prosecutors believe the Zetas were using horse racing to launder drug money in the U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew W. Austin is presiding over the case.

The continuing investigation is a joint effort between the FBI, DEA, US Marshals Service, US Border Patrol and local law enforcement.

Fort Hood Shooting Returning to Court

Tomorrow, Fort Hood shooting suspect Major Nidal Hasan will be back in military court.

Military Judge Colonel Gregory A. Gross announced that attorneys will discuss motions including whether the trial should be moved to December, and a variety of discovery issues. Recent appearances have focused on whether the government should pay for the expert neurological testimony to help with Hasan’s defense.

The shooting on November 5, 2009 left 13 dead and 30 wounded.
