AISD Board to Talk Budget, TRE

Austin ISD Superintendent Meria Carstarphen is scheduled to present her budget recommendation to the Board of Trustees this evening. Total expenditures for the district would be about $8 million more than the current budget. Her recommendation includes a one year, 3 percent raise for employees.

The board will also discuss whether to put a Tax Ratification Election on this November’s ballot. If voters approve the tax rate increase, the 3 percent raise for employees could become permanent.

The board is scheduled to formally adopt the budget in August.

Investigation Active in Texas Governor's Mansion Fire

Friday marked four years since an arsonist set fire to the Texas Governor's Mansion.

A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Transportation tells KUT News that the investigation is still active and a $50,000 reward is still being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

The mansion was partially destroyed in a fire on June 8, 2008. A restoration effort is underway and the mansion is set to reopen later this year.

The state set aside some funding for repairs. Private donations are also still being collection for the restoration.

The former UT Longhorn and star Major League Baseball pitcher is accused of lying in court about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.

The Associated Press reports that Clemens’ defense plans to wrap up its case today. The government will then present a rebuttal.
