'Bike to UT Day' Kicks Off Bike Month Festivities

KUT News

In celebration of Bike Month, the University of Texas at Austin is hosting Bike to UT Day.

Those biking to UT today can stop by one of the many Bike to UT Day kiosks throughout campus between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. to pick up a complimentary light breakfast. From noon until 3 p.m. today, Gregory Plaza will be celebrating with free pizza, t-shirts, tote bags, bike lights, maps and even a keg of root beer.

But UT isn’t the only organization gearing up for bike month.

The City of Austin says over 14,000 Austinites commute to work each week, and that number is only growing. The City is endorsing a series of Bike Month events.

Yesterday, Austin Police announced a new bike safety initiative, which will include sting operations used to catch motorists in violation of the “3-foot” or Vulnerable Users Law.

This week also starts Bike to Eat Week. May 1 through May 5, cyclists will be getting a ten percent discount at fifteen participating restaurants.

Tomorrow, the Austin Public Library and the Austin Police Department will sponsor a family-friendly bike rodeo at the Ruiz Branch Library from 4 to 6 p.m. “Giddyup Bikespokes!,” will offer an obstacle course, helmet fitting, bicycle themed crafts and more. The event is free and open to the public.

May 8 is National Bike to School Day.

And Bike to Work Day is May 17. The Austin Cycling Association will be giving free breakfast, coffee and souvenir bags to cyclists at locations all over town from 7 to 9 a.m. and offering beer, snacks and live music from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Bike mechanics will also be on hand to fix up your ride.

Bike to Work Day will also mark the opening of a new cycle track at Barton Springs Road and South First Street.

On Sunday, May 19, over two miles of Sixth Street will be closed to cars to host Viva Streets! – a free festival that invites Austinites to bike, skate or use their feet in the open streets of Austin.
