The 140th day of the 83rd session -- the last day at the Texas Capitol -- was mostly about pomp and circumstance, but that doesn’t mean nothing got done.
In the House, members brought their families and thanked their staff. They also passed resolutions to correct errors in bills’ language.
State Rep. Trey Martinez-Fischer, D-San Antonio, is the chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus. He honored State Rep. Mary González, D-Clint, the caucus freshman of the session.
"I don’t want to cry," González said. "Well, all of you know that I’m the oldest of 11, and I’m really close to my family. Family’s always meant a lot to me. But it’s really been amazing how quickly you can become family with the people around this room."
Lawmakers don’t have to get too sentimental. A special session is considered likely.
Today, State Senator Leticia Van de Putte took part in a private bill-signing ceremony. When she emerged, she told reporters that Governor Perry’s staff told her “not to go too far tonight.” A special session could start as early as tomorrow.
