April is National Poetry Month, a time when we celebrate poetry and recognize how it has shaped American culture. This year, KUT is participating in National Poetry Month by sharing poems written by students in the Blank Page creative writing programs at Kealing and Fulmore Middle Schools and the Writers' Workshop at Rawson Saunders School. You can read the and listen to the poems here, and you can also listen to the poems read on KUT 90.5 FM throughout the month of April.

Dreamy Machinations

Read by Mayor Lee Leffingwell.

It sat
odd amongst the flowers of his dreamscape
in a cage of mind and bone
tormenting the only self he had with fake ideas of a wonderful future
as would a lamppost a moth
Invent
Explore
Discover-
NO!
it’s not real
there’s no one, unknown objective world
only subjective
but you’re not real
and the unknown is not real
it’s just us
trapped inside ourselves
and whatever we build or destroy, piled around us
The world used to be big.
Now we are bigger than the world.
it’s ours now
and it’s so easy
to push it off
the brink

so build
you are bigger than the world
so make the world bigger
and the small-minded people who want to keep it small
make their minds bigger too.
Build worlds for others to explore
