Each month we spotlight a local nonprofit that's in need of help. It's a way to connect our listeners with charities that make an impact.

Get Involved Spotlight: Sustainable Food Center

From Sustainable Food Center, this month’s Get Involved spotlight non-profit:

Sustainable Food Center cultivates a healthy community by strengthening the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food.  SFC envisions a food secure community where all children and adults grow, share and prepare healthy, local food.

From seed to table, SFC creates opportunities for individuals to make healthy food choices and to participate in a vibrant local food system.  Through organic food gardening, relationships with area farmers, interactive cooking classes and nutrition education, children and adults have increased access to locally grown food and are empowered to improve the long-term health of Central Texans and our environment.

Sustainable Food Center relies on volunteers to accomplish projects and to support our community programs. SFC has opportunities to volunteer at the SFC office, at SFC Farmers’ Markets, in The J.P.’s Peace, Love, and Happiness Foundation Teaching Garden managed by SFC, and  around town at community events.

Volunteer Opportunities:

SFC Farmers’ Markets: Volunteers assist at all SFC Farmers’ Markets in the Information Booth. Tasks range from greeting shoppers, selling merchandise, and assisting with the Double Dollar Incentive Program.  Volunteers also staff the Taste the Place Tent, where they offer samples of farmer and vendor products to customers at all four of SFC’s Farmers’ Markets. Taste the Place volunteers also prepare simple seasonal recipes to inspire and engage customers. Tasks include “shopping” for produce, preparing samples, and answering customer questions about the food.

SFC Office Help: Volunteers assist with office reception, direct visitors, answer phones, and perform light office tasks. Volunteers also learn to use our database to assist with data entry, prepare for classes, and other tasks as needed.

Community Outreach Events: Volunteers are need to represent SFC at many community events such as health fairs and festivals, this usually involves setting up the SFC table, handing out literature, talking about SFC services to attendees, and taking everything down at the end.  Longer events may have multiple volunteer shifts.

Garden Work Days: Volunteers assist in The J.P.’s Peace, Love, and Happiness Foundation Teaching Garden managed by SFC and Sustainable Food Center Herb Garden. Tasks may include weeding, planting, harvesting, and small repairs.

He produces Arts Eclectic, Get Involved, and the Sonic ID project, and also produces videos and cartoons for KUT.org. When pressed to do so, he’ll write short paragraphs about himself in the third person, but usually prefers not to.
