Some Central Texas volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to clean bathrooms and move furniture at Austin Groups for the Elderly. It was part of today’s MLK Day of Service.

“It’s a great way to help the elderly because they’ve done so much in the past to make it possible for us now," said Gwen Blackburn.

Each year, volunteers honor Martin Luther King, Junior by following his example, says Al Lemon. He’s a graduate member of the Alpha Phi Alpha service fraternity, the same fraternity Dr. King had joined.

“You should put others before yourself because that’s the only way you can up lift the next person," said Lemon.

City of Austin offices will be closed Monday for the MLK holiday. The Austin Animal Center will be openfor its regular hours, though, and garbage and recycling collection will happen on the regular schedule.

Several streets will be closedMonday to make way for the MLK March and Festival. The march begins at 9:00 a.m. at the MLK statue on the UT-Austin campus and continues at Huston-Tillotson University with a festival until 3:00 p.m.
