Passenger Pre-Screening Program Begins at ABIA on Tuesday

KUT News

Some airline passengers at Austin-Bergstrom International Airportwill soon be able to move through security lines faster. The Transportation Security Administration's pre-screening program starts Tuesday at ABIA.

Pre-check allows qualified, pre-screened passengers benefits, such as keeping their shoes and light jackets on when going through security.

Frequent fliers will be invited to participate in the program. But anyone can fill out an applicationwith U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Right now, not all airlines are part of the program. Southwest is expected to join within the next year.

The TSA says even those who aren’t eligible for the program could benefit.

“The more people we get through TSA Pre-check, the less the number of people that go through the other lanes that take longer," said Luis Casanova, a spokesperson for the TSA.

To begin with, just one security lane at ABIA will be dedicated to "TSA Pre" passengers. But that could expand depending on the program’s popularity.
