PHOTOS: Austin's Funky Chicken Coop Tour

The sixth annual Funky Chicken Coop Tour was held in Austin on Saturday.

Residents gathered to collect maps to 14 chicken coops, made ready by owners (and their chickens) for visitors. Coop tourists traveled by bike or car to visit chicken coops in residential backyards, a community garden, a farm and at schools and community organizations.

Sunshine Community Gardens, the new coop tour headquarters, was the first stop on the tour. The site hosted  many free events, including a chicken storytime (with the cooperation of Austin Public Libraries) and live poultry-education demonstrations.

Tour organizers also partnered with Austin urban food groups in order to promote sustainable local food production such as  Keep Austin Fed, which hopes to collect 1,000 eggs this year from backyard poultry keepers for its recipients.

“The Funky Chicken Coop Tour is about celebrating community and raising food sustainably in your own backyard," said founder and event organizer Michelle Hernandez. "We want people to see it's easy to do, and that people can do it in the city and in compliance with city codes."
