See the 2015 Umlauf Prize Winners

Founded in 2005, the Umlauf Prize is a yearly award bestowed upon a deserving UT Austin graduate student in Art. After a several-year hiatus, the prize was reinstated in 2014 and continues this year with, for the first time, two winners.

Umlauf Prize juror Suzanne Deal decided this year that two candidates were worthy of the prize -- Gracelee Lawrence and Ryan Hawk. Lawrence and Hawk's works are currently on display at Umlauf Sculpture Garden and they'll both be giving an artist talk on Wednesday, November 4.

While their works were designed separately (and are given the joint name Murmurs), they share a common theme if not a common realization.  Both Lawrence and Hawk had personal reactions to Charles Umlauf's depiction of the male and female forms and chose to respond to Umlauf via their own new works.

Murmurs is on display at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden through November 8, with an artist talk scheduled for 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 4.

Mike is the production director at KUT, where he’s been working since his days as an English major at the University of Texas. He produces Arts Eclectic, Get Involved, and the Sonic ID project, and also produces videos and cartoons for KUT.org. When pressed to do so, he’ll write short paragraphs about himself in the third person, but usually prefers not to.
