TOVO ELECTED TO AUSTIN COUNCIL
Kathie Tovo will join the Austin City Council on June 28. Tovo defeated incumbent Randi Shade Saturday in their Place Three runoff election. Unofficial results put turnout about 9.6%. Tovo pulled 55% of the vote to Shade’s 45%. Tovo told reporters that she wants to start building bridges with city council members who backed her opponent in the election. Shade said, even in defeat, her campaign made a difference by drawing more people who care about city government to the polls.
PERRY TAKES NEW ORLEANS
The Rick Perry “will-he-or-won’t-he” speaking tour rolled into New Orleans Saturday night. Jay Root of our political reporting partner, the Texas Tribune, writes that the Texas governor blasted the Obama administration for “the arrogance and audacity that guides” it. UT LOSES WORLD SERIES OPENER
The Texas Longhorns will meet North Carolina tomorrow afternoon in the second round of the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The team that loses that game is eliminated from the tournament. Saturday night, Texas saw an early 3-0 lead evaporate, falling to Florida8-4. The Longhorns are in their 34thCollege World Series, looking for their seventh NCAA baseball championship.
