Enjoy today's warm weather, because temperatures are supposed to take a nasty, cold turn by midweek. The high this afternoon is forecast to be in the mid 70s, but an Arctic cold front is due to plunge into Central Texas Wednesday, dropping overnight temperatures into the teens and low 20s, with wind chill values in the single digits throughout the region.
Parents and supporters of Zilker Elementary School rallied Saturday morning, calling on Austin Independent School District officials to take the school off a list of proposed facilities closures. AISD's facilities closure task force is scheduled to hold another meeting Tuesday night. AISD is facing a $94 million dollar revenue shortfall next year, much of that loss based on anticipated cuts in state support to education by the Texas Legislature. A total of eight elementary schools and one middle school are on a list released earlier this month by the district. A formal decision by AISD trustees on which of the schools will be closed is expected in March.
The University of Texas women's basketball team celebrates some history during today's game against Colorado at the Frank Erwin Center. 25 years ago, the Longhorn women became the first team to record an undefeated season on their way to the 1986 NCAA National Championship. Former head coach Jody Conradt and members of the '86 team will be honored at this afternoon's game. Gametime is 2:00 p.m.
