Survey Says Texas Tea Party Can't Be Ignored

A new poll suggests the Tea Party movement is more than a flash in the pan in Texas politics.

In a poll from the Texas Tribune and the University of Texas' Texas Politics Project, nearly half of all Texans surveyed say the movement say the Tea Party of Texas has the right amount of influence or deserves more attention in the Lone Star State. Jim Henson, who facilitated the poll, said the movement's influence may not have been strongly visible in the 83rd session of the Texas Legislature.

"The Tea party is a clear voice that is out there in the population that may not be able to drive everything, as we saw in the regular legislative session," said Henson. "But they can't really be ignored either."

A third of Texas voters polled found that the Tea Party had too much influence in Texas politics. The remainder of respondents had no opinion.
