A bill that would ban texting while driving in Texas is scheduled to be heard on the House floor today.
The bill, filed by state Rep. Tom Craddick (R-Midland), would make it a misdemeanor to text behind the wheel – with a fine of $100 for the first offense and $200 after that.
The House bill has bipartisan support and there’s an identical measure in the Texas Senate. But last legislative session, Gov. Rick Perry vetoed a banon texting while driving. He’s called it government micromanagement.
Texas is one of eleven states that doesn’t have a ban. But many Texas cities – including Austin – do.
