UT Mines APD Brass for New Police Chief

APD

The University of Texas has a new police chief. It’s David Carter, who is currently Chief of Staff at the Austin Police Department.

UT criminal justice professor Mike Lauderdale led the search committee for the new chief, and recommended the appointment to UT Austin President Bill Powers, who made the final decision.

Lauderdale says one of Carter’s major challenges will be dealing with high turnover at the department.

“We are often in the process of recruiting and training very, very capable officers who leave us and go to the Austin Police Department, or they may go to Round Rock or something along that line.”

Lauderdale says Carter’s other challenges will include collaborating with UT’s Dean of Students and APD to work with the increasingly dense student population in West Campus and the growing number of students who live elsewhere in the city, especially in the East Riverside area.

Carter’s first day on the job will be July 1.
