Senate Rules Vote

The Texas Senate will vote on the rules it will use for the 82nd Legislature today.  Key among the votes is the so-called "2/3rds Vote."  State Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston) is expected to lead a charge that eliminates the requirement that 2/3rds of senators voting can bring legislation to the floor.  Other Republican senators may try to exempt specific legislation, such as Voter ID, immigration, and some other legislation, exempt from the rule.

AISD Facilities Input

The Austin Independent School District will hold the first of two public hearings tonight on a proposal that could close as many as eight elementary schools and one middle school for the 2011-2012 school year.  The proposal is part of a district-ordered study to see where AISD could trim its budget.  Tonight's meeting is at the Delco Center, just off Manor Road near US 183.

Haitian Quake Anniversary

The earth shook much of Haiti to pieces a year ago today. KUT's Nathan Bernier reports this morning on the outpouring of support--both financial and physical--that Austinites sent to Haiti, and on what's happened since.

Ian Crawford joined KUT as News Editor in 2008, after spending over four years as a reporter/anchor at KLBJ Radio in Austin. He began his broadcasting career while still in high school in Southern Oregon. During high school and college at the University of Oregon, he worked at times as a reporter, news anchor, sports play-by-play reporter, music host and commercial producer before moving to Texas in 2003.
