For almost 35 years, a Texas man has been collecting letters mailed around the lone star state during its years as a republic.

From Texas Standard:

Jim Stever could show you an original letter from Sam Houston to someone at the Battle of San Jacinto.

For almost 35 years, the 90-year-old World War II veteran has been collecting letters written during the days of the Republic of Texas.

The Corpus Christi resident met with the Standard to discuss his affinity for centuries-old letters and their contents.

Stever says the short history of the Republic means only a few letters remain from that time, but he still manages to track them down.
