“World Music” Returns to Airwaves Sunday Nights

AUSTIN, Texas – Jan. 27, 2017 – A new show hosted by local hip-hop super-fans Confucius and Fresh joins the KUTX 98.9 airwaves Saturday nights.

The Breaks,” a live show from 11 p.m. Saturdays to 1 a.m. Sundays, highlights the best hip-hop and R&B from local and emerging artists, alongside mainstream acts. “The Breaks” replaces late nights with Katie Bradley.

Denberg is among 10 inductees this year, which include songwriters, musicians, and individuals and groups that created and continue to nurture the music community.

City of Austin proclaims Sept. 1, 2016 “John Aielli Day”

Austin, Texas – Sept. 1, 2016 – From an exploding population and gridlock, to the opening – and closing – of The Armadillo World Headquarters, Austin has undergone significant changes in the past 50 years, but one thing has been a constant: John Aielli, host of “Eklektikos” on KUTX 98.9.

What: KUTX Live at Mueller, a free, family friendly music series kicks off Friday, May 6, and continues Friday nights through May 20.

Each concert starts at 7 p.m. with a kid-friendly act hosted by “Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child,” (heard on KUTX from 6-7 p.m. Sundays) followed by rock ‘n’ roll for the grown-ups. Additionally, some of Austin’s favorite food trucks will be onsite.

AUSTIN, Texas —March 8, 2016—KUTX 98.9 was voted “Best Radio Station,” while “Twine Time” and its longtime host Paul Ray were named “Best Radio Program” and “Best Radio Host” respectively in the Austin Chronicle’s annual Austin Music Industry Awards last night at the Palm Door.

This is the third consecutive year the station has earned the “Best Radio Station” distinction since launching in January 2013.

AUSTIN, Texas — Feb. 24, 2016 — KUTX 98.9 and Four Seasons Hotel Austin are partnering for the fourth consecutive year to connect music fans to some of the most anticipated artists at the 2016 SXSW Music Conference, including White Denim, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Sweet Spirit and Hayes Carll, as well as those poised to break out.

What: Jimmie Vaughan and friends will celebrate Paul Ray’s life at Antone’s Nightclub, Austin’s home of the blues. The event will feature music of the Cobras, as well as tributes from some of Austin’s finest musicians – including Denny Freeman and Charlie Sexton – who were influenced by “Twine Time,” the rhythm and blues radio show Ray hosted for nearly 40 years.

Additional special guests will be announced closer to the show.

Yesterday, KUT turned 57. So for this edition of Wayback Wednesday, we've cracked open the old photo album to share a few memories from the station's nearly 60 years on the UT Austin campus. 

Seeing as we're a radio station, we've also decided to share some of our best audio from our earliest years as well, including a reading from lauded poet Allen Ginsberg, a frank discussion about education and crime with legendary Texas politician Barbara Jordan, a lecture on non-violence in the tumultuous 1970s with Joan Baez and Ira Sandperl, and a discussion on writing and filmmaking with Texas laureate Larry McMurtry.

AUSTIN, Texas – June 8, 2015 – KUTX 98.9, The Austin Music Experience, has named its first assistant program director who will focus on marketing, outreach and fundraising efforts for the station.

Jacquie Fuller has joined the KUTX programming team where she will oversee the station’s presence at live shows and cultural events around Austin, as well as collaborate with the fundraising and marketing departments across the station. Listeners will hear her on 98.9 as a fill-in host.

This weekend's shows includes an album release by a local 70s-influenced rock band, a chamber music experiment by the drummer of the Police and a concert by singer-songwriter John Mellencamp.

AUSTIN, Texas — Feb. 25, 2015 — No wristband? No problem! Once again KUTX 98.9, The Austin Music Experience, is partnering with Four Seasons Hotel Austin to connect music fans to some of the most anticipated artists at the 2015 SXSW Music Conference, including Delta Spirit and Chuck Prophet, and those poised to break out. 

KUTX 98.9 will air four early morning broadcasts live from the Four Seasons Austin Hotel Ballroom from 7 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 18 through Friday, March 20, and from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 21.

KUTX Brings John Aielli (Back) to Drive Time and Adjusts Special Programs to Create a More Consistent Listening Experience, Beginning Sept. 1

AUSTIN, Texas – Aug. 18, 2014 – KUTX 98.9 is changing the air times of some shows and discontinuing others in order to more consistently deliver on its mission of reflecting the Austin Music Experience.

PHILADELPHIA –May 15, 2014 — The Corporation for Public Broadcasting today announced a $750,000 grant for a historic collaboration between five public media stations to build a new, national, online music video showcase featuring exclusive live performances of new and emerging bands.

Code named the "Music X Project," this service plans to launch by the end of 2014.  The five founding stations are KCRW in Los Angeles, KTBG in Kansas City, KUTX in Austin, WFUV in New York City, and WXPN in Philadelphia.
