By all accounts, 2020 is an unusual election year. The coronavirus pandemic and a highly polarized political landscape make it a challenge to predict how voters will decide the presidential race as well as other national and local races. For Texans, the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican John Cornyn and Democratic challenger MJ Hegar is among the most prominent contests on the ballot, and both candidates must navigate several major challenges to be successful.

In 2018, MJ Hegar challenged Republican incumbent John Carter, who has represented Texas’ 31st Congressional District since 2003. Although she lost, the narrow race opened the door to future Democrats competing for Carter’s seat. Two candidates, Christine Mann and Donna Imam, say their personal careers have prepared them to unseat the longtime U.S. Representative, but only one will make it beyond the runoff ballot.

MJ Hegar has been the front-runner throughout Texas' Democratic primary race for the U.S. Senate. Hegar, who first ran for office during a wave of women seeking office following the Me Too movement, won 22% of the vote in the crowded March primary.

The two remaining Democrats vying for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas called for comprehensive reforms to address police brutality and racial inequality in a debate Saturday that featured little disagreement on the issues and in which both candidates focused their attacks on Republican incumbent John Cornyn.

By the end of Super Tuesday, it still wasn't clear who would face MJ Hegar in a runoff to face Republican incumbent John Cornyn in the race for U.S. Senate in November. But finally, on Wednesday, a field of 12 candidates was winnowed  to two: Hegar and North Texas state Sen. Royce West. Their runoff election will be in late May.

Democrats who want to be Republican U.S. Rep. John Carter's challenger in November think focusing on health care will turn the 31st District north of Austin blue. But Republicans, who have long held the seat, say their opponents won't have much luck without a high-profile candidate like 2018's MJ Hegar, who is now focusing on a U.S. Senate run.
