Wildfire Danger at Historic Highs Today

State officials are warning of extreme wildfire danger across much of the western half of Texas today, as hot, dry, windy conditions couple with low humidity.

The Texas Forest Service was fighting several wildfires yesterday, but was bracing for more, reported the Associated Press.

"We have reports of fires literally coming in by the minute, and tomorrow will be worse," said Mark Stanford, fire operations chief for the Texas Forest Service.

Fire crews are still battling a massive wildfire in West Texas that has consumed more than 125 square miles.

Officials are urging people in wildfire-prone areas to avoid any outdoor activities that will throw a spark.

Advocates Say Health Cuts 'Devastating'

The Statesman has this look at what health care advocates warn will be a dramatic remaking of Texas' health care system, under budget cuts passed by the House - and even those under consideration by the Senate.

Much of the impact would be on elderly Texans, adults with disabilities, those in need of mental health care and low-income families in search of obstetricians, pediatricians and general practitioners. Private insurance rates and hospital-provided care also might be affected.

There has been a good deal of reporting about the cuts originally proposed would affect health care, but as the budget process continues, alarm appears to be growing that some of the biggest changes may come to pass.
