Charges Dropped in Shooting at Lone Star College (Updated)

Texas Tribune

Update (Jan. 28, 11 a.m.): The Associated Press is reporting that prosecutors have dropped assault charges against a man injured in a shooting last week at Lone Star College.

Another man, 22 year-old Trey Foster, who was not injured in the incident is facing resisting arrest and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Carlton Berry, 22, was one of three people injured in the shooting. He was arrested soon after the Jan. 22 shootings at the Houston-area college. The Harris County district attorney's office now says Berry was a victim.

Foster was arrested Friday in the Dallas area.

Update (Jan. 22, 4:55 p.m): Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott responded to the shooting:

All Texas schools must be places of safety and learning. Lawless shootings on campuses will not be tolerated and should meet swift justice. Texas will do all it can to make the school environment safe for students, teachers and administrators. Today’s shooting is an example of the critical importance of school safety plans and emergency drills in all schools. Having a plan and practicing that plan can save lives when seconds count. We do know that Lone Star College submitted their safety and security plan to the Texas School Safety Center, confirming the campus had a critical incident plan in place. I’ve instructed our Crime Victim Services Division to immediately make contact with the school and with families involved to offer whatever assistance we can provide.

Update (Jan. 22, 4:40 p.m.): Harris County Sheriff Maj. Armando Tello says the shooting was the result of an altercation between two people, at least one of whom was a student. Both people were wounded in the shooting and hospitalized. A college maintenance man was also shot and taken to the hospital.

Update (Jan. 22, 3:05 p.m.): KHOU reports that both suspects are now in custody. The first suspect was detained and transported to a hospital to receive care for a gun shot wound to the leg. According to reports, the second suspect was detained when he tried to check himself in to a local hospital.

At least three people have been shot at Lone Star College's North Harris Campus in Houston. One person has been detained. KHOU reports that police are searching for a second suspect on the loose.

Students are now allowed to leave from campus. Several area schools are on lockdown: Nimitz High School, Nimitz 9th Grade Campus, Parker Intermediate and Dunn Clifford Elementary.

Several Houston TV stations are live streaming their breaking news coverage of the shootings. Watch coverage from WFAAKPRC, My Fox Houston or KHOU.
