Texas is getting deeper into drought, and the situation will only get worse if spring doesn’t bring the rain we need.
The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor, out today, says almost all of Texas ranges from abnormally dry to the most severe drought.
This time of year we normally would get some rain; if we don’t, National Weather Service Senior Hydrologist Mark Lenz says, the dryness will actually feed on itself as temperatures climb.
“Less evaporation going on, and that water that would normally come out of the soil and evaporate into the air to help even form some cloud cover would be lacking,” Lenz said.
And he says he doesn’t see much in the long-term forecast that offers a lot of hope. What it may take to get us out of drought is a tropical system from the Gulf of Mexico, even a tropical storm or hurricane.
