How Austin Can Help Unaccompanied Minors at the Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Unaccompanied minors and other immigrants continue to arrive at the border, creating a national dialogue on immigration reform.

President Obama is expected to meet with the presidents of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras today to discuss the humanitarian crisis along the border.

Organizations and faith-based groups around the country are doing what they can to assist the minors. Austin is no exception – several organizations and churches are currently accepting donations. Here’s a roundup:

St. James Episcopal Church

You can donate items including clothing, adult and baby toiletries and shoes. For more information on what to donate, call 512-926-6339.

Members of St. James will be making a trip to South Texas on Sunday to drop off donations they have acquired. Members will potentially be taking another trip in August to drop off more items.

Keller Williams Austin Northwest

Items that are needed include clothing, adult and baby toiletries and shoes.

They are currently accepting donations until 6 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. After these days, the office will accept donation during their regular business hours. For more information, contact their office at 512-346-3550

Christo Rey Catholic Church

Clothing, undergarments and toiletries are currently being accepted.

Anyone wanting to donate items can do so during their normal business hours (9 a.m. – 7 p.m.) If you need more information, you can contact them at 512-477-1099

Catholic Charities of Central Texas

Only monetary donations are being accepted. These donations will help with legal services to assist those families who have a legal claim to be reunited with their families in the United States.

If you want to provide monetary assistance you can donate online, or mail a check specifying that you want the money to go to unaccompanied minors. Catholic Charities can be reached at 512-651-6100 for any clarifications.

RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services)

The RAICES office in Austin is only accepting monetary donations to help with legal services.

You are encouraged to send your checks to their office in Austin or San Antonio, with a written specification that the check goes to the unaccompanied minors.
