Doctuh Mistuh's Summer Double Feature

In recent years, the production company Doctuh Mistuh has staged crowd-pleasing musical versions of Evil Dead, Silence of the Lambs, and Reefer Madness; it's safe to say that pop culture musical theater is in their wheelhouse. So it's not too surprising that they're the company that secured the rights to produce the regional premiere of Heathers, the Musical, based on the 1988 dark comedy cult film.

Doctuh Mistuh artistic director Michael McKelvey says he fell in love with the Heathers script, and felt like it would be a great fit for the company (especially since it hadn't been done in this part of the country before). Other members of Doctuh Mistuh expressed a desire to tackle The Rocky Horror Show as well, and before long, McKelvey struck upon the idea of running the two shows in rep this summer. Inspired by the idea of cult movie double features, they've even scheduled a few double bill nights, with Heathers running first and Rocky Horror closing out the evening.

Staging two large-scale shows in rep is a challenge for all concerned, but McKelvey says everybody was on board, with the tech crew pulling double duty and roughly 80% of the cast appearing in both shows.

See Heathers, The Musical and/or The Rocky Horrow Show at Salvage Vanguard Theater through July 11.
