From Generation Serve, this month's Get Involved spotlight non-profit:
Mission: To engage youth in volunteerism and empower them to make a difference in their communities.
About Generation SERVE
Generation SERVE, formerly Little Helping Hands, is developing generations of community-minded leaders and citizens through programs that inspire lifelong volunteerism and philanthropy.
Family Volunteering Program
The Generation SERVE Family Volunteering Program allows parents/caregivers to volunteer with their children, ages 3-17, for our community’s environment, animals, senior citizens, and individuals in need. Generation SERVE partners with nearly 90 local nonprofit organizations and organizes and manages family-friendly volunteer activities to help those nonprofit partners achieve their missions. Last year, 5,413 youth volunteered with their families through our programs, contributing a total of 12,422 volunteer hours to the Austin community.
Service Learning Program
As they mature, youth can participate in our Service Learning Program for 3rd-5th graders, expanding their knowledge of the community and inspiring self-motivated engagement. They learn about a specific community need alongside their peers, brainstorm solutions together, volunteer, and reflect on what they have learned by working independently on a personal service project. Our Service Learning programs take place in the fall and spring and focus on topics such as Helping the Environment, Helping People, and Helping Animals.
Youth Leadership Program
For middle school and high school students, we offer a Youth Leadership Program where youth can develop leadership skills during the summer and train to lead our Family Volunteering activities. Teens interested in this program for the summer of 2018 can apply and interview beginning in February.
