Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s failed lawsuit seeking to throw out election results in other states came originally from lawyers close to the campaign of former President Donald Trump, according to a report in the New York Times.

The federal charges include obstruction of an official proceeding and destruction of government property, the Department of Justice said Friday.

The trial itself will begin on Feb. 9, giving the Democratic House impeachment managers and Trump's defense team two weeks to file briefs and finalize their legal preparations.

The House of Representatives, which voted to impeach Trump last week, plans to transmit the article of impeachment on Monday evening.
